Epiphany Exhibition

Moving effortlessly between abstraction and figuration, the imagined and the real; the paintings in this exhibition are depicting a world in which indications of a specific place or time are absent. A poetics of free-association unites the works.

About the Artists

All three artists come from different backgrounds - Alexandre Dujardin from Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg, Alpagrif from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and Yasemin Cengiz Cagatay from Bosphorus University -; but they have a lot in common: their works share a surreal element, a love of nature: Dujardin’ s exquisite flowers, butterflies and figures form a brain, and meet Yasemin Cengiz Çağatay’s otherworldly insects or humanized trees living in a parallel world; and Alpagrif’s surreal creatures navigating the seas under full moon. They bring an ethereal sensibility to their paintings; and their compositions denote art historical foundations in romanticism, while also offering contemporary metaphors into the depths of human mind, like Dujardin's Aenima series  reminiscent of meditative mandalas. They all weave together elaborate narratives that entwine together the legend of the past with a glimpse of a possible future. All works’ imagery springs from the artists’ imagination, and reflect a belief in the enduring vitality of beauty; and drawing and painting as a primary form of visual communication. As contemporary artists, they are outside the confines of manifesto-driven art, and they are working in a mindset where “everything is possible”, and imagination has no boundaries. They draw or paint with their mind’s eye, and their “Epiphanies”, sudden intuitive perceptions into the essential meanings of their preoccupations, constitute the main theme of this exhibition based on the idea that artists depict these very epiphanies in most of their works.Employing an expansive vocabulary of layers, the forms are organized and defined on multiple planes allowing the paintings to be read in terms of both time and space.Intricate  forms suggestive of nature like flowers, trees, butterflies, half-insects and rock-like structures meet the space imagery of Alpagrif's futuristic work. Disparate visual elements such as imaginary mountains and submerged islands all overlap in planes that impart depth and create rhythmic patterns.

Alpagrif is currently a senior at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts Film and TV department, and has graduated from The Koc School, Istanbul in 2016. Galeri MCRD's Spectacular exhibition in 2015 at the gallery in İstanbul is the first exhibition the young artist has participated, and he also contributed to the subsequent Epiphany exhibition with his digital works.

Yasemin Cengiz Çağatay had her first solo exhibition Beyond Reality in All Arts Istanbul Fair in April 2013, and had other solo exhibitions at Galeri MCRD: Work-In-Progress (2014) and Other Worlds (2014).She has participated to the group exhibitions of the gallery, Reflex (2014), Spectacular (2015), and Epiphany (2015), as well as the gallery's group exhibition at Contemporary Istanbul 2014. She had a new solo exhibition at Contemporary Istanbul 2019 titled Power with 14 mixed media paintings.

Alexandre Dujardin has graduated from Ecole des Arts Decoratifs de Strasbourg in 2009 and has exhibited his work in many solo and group exhibitions in Germany, France and Italy. He has participated to Galeri MCRD's The Quest, Reflex and Epiphany exhibitions as well as the gallery's group exhibition at Contemporary Istanbul 2014.
