About the Artist
The artist's perspective engenders an indeterminacy that veers sharply from the real world. The occupants of her paintings are the stuff of dreams. In a visual interplay of the familiar and the unknown, she imagines the macrocosmic depths of the universe. In her fairytale world, people, animals, plants and hybrid creatures interact, but familiar dimensions and natural laws no longer apply. She explores both the happy and threatening sides of fairy tales , alluding to diverse cultural references: themes of the Ottoman culture like derviches are represented in a technique reminiscent of “ebru” , the ancient art of marbling materialising as if part of a dreamy meditation where otherworldly figures appear; referencing to the futuristic science fiction elements populating the painting like in Mystery.
Eerie and nebulous creatures inhabit the alternate realities that may be bigger or smaller than our own, imagined or fantastical. Worlds within worlds are depicted and she opens new windows onto the world and to the universe lying beyond. Painting for her is often coming from her unconscious and she draws and paints automatically.Sometimes her unconscious takes her into the parallel reality of an imagined afterlife where she sees the Angel of death ; some other time she joins the joyful chorus of the hybrid creatures singing in an underwater world, where visual luxuriance satisfies her senses. She expects the spectators to project their own imagination and desire upon her works, to see in them whatever they like. Her self-contained worlds carrying dramatic content like the semi-butterfly symbolising the Unbearable Lightness of Being are also calling into question the possibility of other life forms.
