The title of the exhibition, “WORK-IN-PROGRESS” is a metaphor for Yasemin Cengiz Çağatay’s particular working method, the restless, searching quality of her work : A process of ongoing exploration and discovery.

About the Artist
Constant change inherent in the meaning of “work_in_progress” reflects the work process of the artist defining image production in the artist’s mind. Working from imagination alone without an a priori image, eschewing sketches and source material, the artist creates images spontaneously. With her experimental work she aims at creating her own artificial reality.
Moving freely between figuration and abstraction, Yasemin Cengiz Cagatay’s work stands as a testament to her independence of thought. In her attempt to interpret the increasing speed of the world around her, the artist uses fragmentation of the images as a technique to convey it - à la Balla, Severini and Boccioni, the Futurist artists who were also enthusiastic about innovation and technology. Her concern with motion is reflected in the exceptionally dense nature of her complex compositions.Using manmade forms more than organic ones, she comes up with a space age imagery which could also be seen as poetic intimations of landscape. Her romantic tendency counter balances the coldness of the futuristic game imagery through her use of opalescent colors interspersed with sonorous umbers, dark blues and blacks.
Her multiple, overlapping vantage points allow for her ongoing exploration of both nonlinear narratives and alternate histories:the omnipresent sense of constant search is built into the structure of her work; implicitly suggesting the possibility of simultaneous, diverging experiences and realities. This further challenges the slippery notion of "objective truth" which seems far away from her imaginary realms. The artist queries the future in her works, breaking through traditional narrative structures to blur fact and fiction.Creating imperceptible transitions between different times and places, the artist effortlessly transports the viewer through space and time. Her paintings question our conception of and presumptions about our surrounding reality – what we see and where its meaning and beauty lies. The productions of her mind's quizzical eye promise a three-dimensional experience in the realms of imagination.Navigating a terrain between abstraction and representation, her work carries the influence of a long history of art that is fascinated by the threshold between the momentary and the eternal: what we see and what we know.
